FAIRMONT HOTEL VANCOUVER PREPARES TO MARK 85 YEARS OF TIMELESS ELEGANCE

-85 Day Countdown Commences to Milestone Anniversary at the Castle-

VANCOUVER, BC (March 4, 2024) – With just 85 days until its 85th anniversary, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, affectionately known as the “Castle in the City”, readies itself to commemorate eight and a half decades of timeless elegance and exceptional hospitality. Since its grand opening on May 25, 1939 by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the hotel has stood as a symbol of luxury and sophistication in the heart of Vancouver.

As the countdown to this momentous occasion commences, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is delighted to unveil a year-long celebration, inviting both guests and locals to partake in the festivities. From a Canadian-first Artist in Residency program with Moomooi, to an esteemed partnership with the iconic Vancouver Art Gallery featuring beloved artist Emily Carr, and an exclusive luxury retailer collaboration, to a nostalgic pop-up return of the once-beloved Panorama Roof whisking guests back to a bygone era—the offerings are as diverse as they are exciting.

In addition to the return of cherished classics like “Christmas at the Castle” and unique afternoon teas, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver will be introducing entirely new, never-before-seen experiences and an array of events that honour its storied past while embracing the spirit of the community it proudly serves.

In continuation of its commitment to enhancing this historical landmark, the hotel’s most recent renovation encompassed several key upgrades. This included a comprehensive redesign of Fairmont Gold, comprising 50 guest rooms, the development of new suites for multigenerational travellers, and the establishment of a newly enhanced Fairmont Gold Lounge.

Furthermore, the Fourteenth Floor Heritage Suites underwent a transformation inspired by a bygone era characterized by opulent travel, visiting dignitaries, lavish attire, brocade fabrics, and royal tapestries, and pays homage to the Royal Visit in 1939. Meticulous care was taken to preserve the hotel’s extensive array of heirlooms, including the guest room doors crafted in 1939 from English harewood with bronze inset door plates, the ornate bronze hallway doors, the African Sapele wood-paneled walls of the elevator lobby accented with solid bronze inlay strips, and the English black walnut veneer-paneled walls of the Lt. Governor Suite—originating from a single walnut tree and expertly matched to display symmetrical markings throughout the entire room.

Throughout 2024, guests can expect to be immersed in a diverse tapestry of cultural offerings, iconic events, historical commemorations, and exciting pop culture showcases. With a renewed focus on welcoming back the local community, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is dedicated to creating unforgettable memories and fostering connections that span generations.

“This anniversary marks a significant milestone in the illustrious history of Fairmont Hotel Vancouver,” says Adam Laker, General Manager at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. “We are incredibly excited to celebrate this occasion with our guests, partners, and the entire Vancouver community. As we look to the year ahead, we are committed to delivering unparalleled experiences that reflect the timeless charm and enduring legacy of our beloved ‘Castle in the City.'”

As the anticipation builds for the 85th anniversary celebration, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver invites everyone to be a part of this historic moment and join in the festivities throughout the year.
